Always with a smile on his face and the air of an adult teenager who enjoys life to the fullest. On this day in December, at the YouTube facilities, Mastu comes to tell us about his channel, his growing number of subscribers that has reached five million and his joy for making videos.
Now also known as Squeezie or Michou, he is one of the platform’s rising stars thanks to his videos like lie Detector Interrogation, 7th most viewed video of the year on YouTube. It’s difficult to introduce yourself, I never thought about it, explains a shy young man who is usually so comfortable in front of the camera to Tech&Co. I make entertainment videos. It can be music videos, videos in the car or in my studio, more produced. But it always focuses on humor and what I like.”
At 23, Théo, whose real name resembles that of all young people his age, in a tracksuit, sneakers and sweatshirts. But it is by observing the effect that his large size (1.86 m) has on the young eyes that look at him that we can judge his notoriety.
Independent video game debut
Like many of his peers, it was in his bedroom that he began making videos of his favorite video games, “little indie games like Yandere Simulator, Hearthstone either Pokemon”, remember. The boy from Saint-Dizier then chose to interrupt his studies in life and Earth sciences to dedicate himself fully to his new activity.
“It was the first time I was faced with school failure in any way and I didn’t feel good about leaving it,” says Mastu. Then she discovered video editing and got into it: “I liked it too much and I started making small videos until I wondered if I could make a living from it by putting myself 100% into it.”
Aware of the possibility of his career taking off, he remains lucid about a sector that is increasingly saturated with influencers and content creators of all kinds. “It is true that it is increasingly difficult to go out,” admits Mastu. “But if there’s a desire to make videos, you have to go there now and put your all into it, improve yourself and always try to do better than before. It ends up paying off.”
From Michou to Tom Holland
His advice for apprentice cameramen? Don’t forget to use the other formats that YouTube offers like short, shorter videos that are also a “cooler” way to start reaching a new audience and emerge. But don’t hesitate to collaborate with other YouTubers either.
“It’s still more fun to collaborate with people you like and it’s more fun to see two friends laughing than someone just talking to their cameras,” Mastu admits with a smile. “It’s not essential.” However, this smiled on him and allowed him to make himself known by sharing the screen with Inoxtag, Michou or even interviewing Tom Holland for the premiere ofUnexplored. “You have to go to be lucky,” laughs the young man who also did not hide in a video that he went through a period of depression and needed help to get rid of his dark thoughts.
His luck is undoubtedly his relaxed look and jovial face. He doesn’t seem too confident to some and not too relaxed to others. But he admits that he had to learn to be himself. “When I started, I was alone in front of the camera. It’s a bit weird, you have to admit. So I smiled stupidly,” he laughs. “I was very inspired by what Squeezie, Hugo Délire, Amixem or Terracid were doing when I started. He’s coming today.”
“We can do great things with the Internet”
If he left Saint-Dizier for Angers and is now recognized on the street, Mastu does not believe that he has changed so much from the teenager he was: “I like to watch my first videos with nostalgia. It reminds me of where I come from.” , there I see friends that I have lost sight of a little since then ”, declares the creator that he admits that he does not always realize what is happening to him. But he “he’s pretty,” he slips into a smile, though he admits that he, too, sometimes comes across fans who are a bit forgetful of respect for privacy. “In 98% of the cases he is doing well and is great”, he assures, however. “I live it very well.”
Now that he’s one of the YouTubers that matter, he knows he’s expected in every video, but also in new major streaming events, like Zerator’s Z Event or Squeezie’s recent GP Explorer. “These are incredible events, but I often have doubts about the legitimacy,” he says humbly. “I think he’s great, but I don’t feel entitled to it compared to the others.”
They had offered him to participate, but he preferred to decline the invitation. “I’m not a huge car fan myself either and I thought there were probably YouTubers and streamers much more likely to enjoy and participate,” says Mastu, who says he’s still impressed by the record back then and the scope of the event. . “It’s proof that great things can be done with the Internet,” he enthuses, happy to bring a little of “his motivation and his desire” to those who watch him.
