For yet another year, online platforms have not escaped technical incidents. You can no longer send a message, update your news feed or access the app – the signs of failure are numerous and often leave users in disarray.
DownDetector has been reporting these outages for several years and has decided this year to reveal the top 10 largest outages of the year 2022. Outages reported by hundreds of thousands of Internet users, but which nevertheless do not exceed the significant stoppage suffered by the Meta group on 4 October 2021, resulting in the inability to access Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp.
Spotify big winner
To establish its top 10, Downdetector ranked the incidents that generated the most reports on its website. Certain breakdowns of TikTok, Snapchat or Twitter have users worried. But the top 5 does not contain these three giants of social networks.
Instagram, for example, suffered an outage on July 14 that scared 600,000 people for more than three hours. Roblox, one of the most popular multiplayer games in the world, ranks fourth with 700,000 reports and an outage that lasted about 12 hours. The Discord chat platform experienced a two-hour outage on May 4, generating 1.1 million reports.
WhatsApp reaps the silver medal with its recent cut on October 25. With its two billion users around the world, it’s hard to go unnoticed when your app falls victim to a bug. A total of 2.8 million internet users reported the incident to Downdetector.
Spotify, meanwhile, takes the gold medal for the biggest internet outage of 2022. On March 8, the streaming service was inaccessible for nearly two hours, generating some 2.9 million reports. But the Swedish service also experienced several other outages, including one on October 21 when the album midnight by Taylor Swift is available.
Taylor Swift would also seem to be a cause in her own right for internet outages. In addition to Spotify, the American singer recently caused (in spite of her) a breakdown in Ticketmaster during the sale of tickets for her future tour.
