Meta wants to help you detect and avoid scams on WhatsApp and Messenger

As part of Cybersecurity Month, Meta announced two new tools to help users detect and act on scams.

October is not just the month to celebrate Halloween. Many don’t know it, but this month is also dedicated to cybersecurity, in Europe and the United States. It is in this context that Meta announced the launch of new tools to protect users from scams on its WhatsApp and Messenger messaging services.

Help users detect scams

In the first, the Californian group has deployed notices that will be displayed when the user is about to share their screen with a stranger during a video call. They are intended to “provide more context to users so they can detect and avoid scams.” Because the group is aware that scammers can pressure their targets to share their screen to encourage them to divulge sensitive information.

“Only share your screen with people you trust. They will be able to see everything you display on the screen, including sensitive information such as your banking details,” the warning warns. The user can then click “Continue” or “Cancel”.

This new tool complements one of the functions launched in August on WhatsApp to also protect users from scams. When they start chatting with a stranger, she gives them “more context” about that person to help them make “an informed decision.”

Better detect scams

Regarding Messenger, Meta has begun testing a feature to better detect scams in conversations. Alerts the user when a new contact sends them a potentially fraudulent message. “Meta uses your device’s technology to notify you if a recently created conversation with a new connection may contain signs of scamming,” says a help page dedicated to this feature.

The user will then be asked to submit recently received messages so the AI can analyze them. If a possible scam is detected, you will receive “information that explains why the messages may indicate a scam and suggestions for actions to take (such as blocking or reporting the other user in the conversation),” the company detailed.

In addition to these new tools, Meta also shares some tips for older people, who are more vulnerable to scams. The company particularly recommends being careful with unsolicited messages or calls and never communicating personal or financial information in response to unexpected calls, emails or SMS.
