Tens of thousands of banned Twitter accounts have been reinstated, creating a massive misinformation risk. To this we must now add an almost decimated moderation team.
Already greatly reduced from previous waves of layoffs, the moderation department of the social network experienced cuts again this Friday, January 6. Employees tasked with handling misinformation, hate speech, state media and bullying were targeted for firing. In all, more than a dozen people were made redundant at the Dublin and Singapore offices.
They include Nur Azhar Bin Ayob, social media integrity manager for Twitter’s Asia-Pacific region, a relatively new hire, and Analuisa Dominguez, Twitter’s senior director of revenue policy.
Cascading layoffs
Ella Irwin, Head of Security at Twitter, confirms this a Bloomberg that several members of the teams have been laid off. “It was more logical to consolidate the teams in one place (instead of two) for example,” he justified Bloomberg. She said Twitter had removed entities in areas of the business that did not have enough “volume” to ensure “continued support.”
Since taking over the company, Elon Musk has overseen the firing or departure of about half of Twitter’s employees and instigated a breakneck work pace.
