Apple has been working on its mixed reality headset for seven years. But after many postponements, the project will finally be released to the public in the spring. According to information from Bloomberg, the presentation would be scheduled before the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), its annual conference in June. Commercialization is expected later in the year, in the fall.
Apple first mentioned the project in 2017. At the time, a release was scheduled for 2019. But the Reality Pro, the likely name of the device, was repeatedly pushed back to 2020, then 2021. And so on until the latest promises that ranged to see the product put on the market in January 2023.
There is no set price at this time
This time, the deadlines must be kept. Developers have already had access to the device to familiarize themselves with its operating system, called xrOS (but called “Borealis” internally). With this test phase, accessible to a small number of people, the goal was to launch the production of third-party applications.
Despite these advances, Bloomberg assures that there is still a lot of work for the Apple teams before a commercial launch. The hardware, software or service aspects have not yet been approved. Also, the selling features are not yet established. This means that the price or the way to promote your product to customers is not yet set.
That is why additional resources have been allocated to the project. Several engineering departments have been mobilized, which should delay other innovations from the brand. Either way, Apple seems intent on making its mixed reality headset the flagship of the year 2023.
