There are only a few hours left before Stadia shuts down. Google’s video game streaming service will shut down on Thursday, January 19 at 8:59 a.m. If the announcement had cast doubt on the rise of cloud gaming, users had more realistic considerations. What to do with your Stadia controller?
Google developers have ensured that the drivers Bluetooth connection will be unlocked. “We will share details next week on how to use this feature,” the service’s blog post read. Therefore, the object must be usable, via a wireless connection, on platforms other than Stadia.
A previously limited connection
When it launched in November 2019, Google’s promise caused a stir: play video games without a console or computer. But not without a controller. That’s why the offer included a Chromecast Ultra (for watching your games on your TV screen), but also a dedicated controller.
Only problem, the Bluetooth connection of this item was limited to exclusive use with Stadia. Players then complained that their controller became unusable once the cloud gaming service was shut down permanently. A wired connection could still allow use on a PC, Mac, or smartphone.
With this latest update, Stadia drivers will be able to survive the end of service. A decision that will prevent peripherals from collecting dust or ending up in the trash.
