Every year the same refrain for Samsung. Even before the official enthronement of its standard-bearer, the South Korean manufacturer has to deal with multiple well-supported rumors and numerous information leaks, sometimes even internally.
We take stock of what we can expect from the upcoming Galaxy S23 and its acolytes, which will be unveiled on February 1 in San Francisco (7pm Paris time).
One, two or three Samsung Galaxy S23?
Samsung should present three smartphones from its new range as in previous years. The Galaxy S23 would be accompanied by the Galaxy S23+. A very high-end version called Ultra is whispered again.
Design: shift back
Change to wait for the look of the next Galaxy S23. The whole would have a more immersive screen, without returning to the curved edges that were long the prerogative of the Samsung Galaxy S Edge. The Galaxy S23 would have a 6.1-inch Amoled FHD+ flat screen with a punch for the camera, the S23+ with a 6.6-inch Amoled panel while the S23 Ultra would display a 6.8-inch diagonal QHD+ screen.
The first two would support a 120Hz image refresh rate, dynamically adjusting as needed (48-120Hz). The latter would benefit from a variable refresh rate of 1 to 120 Hz. The fingerprint reader would still be placed under the screen and everything would offer Dolby Atmos speakers.
But it is at the back that we can expect the biggest change, widely heralded in the conference invitation video. Forget the black dominoes, the back of the device would simply pop out the three photo sensors individually, accompanied by the flash on top.
Everything will be designed in part with recycled materials, but equipped with extremely resistant glass to shocks and scratches (Gorilla Glass Victus 2).
Camera: the latest for the Ultra
Thanks to Roland Quandt, a very knowledgeable German technophile who seems to have had access to press renderings ahead of time, we know what the camera will look like. In the Galaxy S23 as in the Galaxy S23+ we would find the same configuration of modules on the back: a 50 Mpex main sensor, a 12 Mpex ultra-wide angle, all accompanied by a 10 Mpex telephoto lens with a 3x. optical zoom
But that wouldn’t stop all of Samsung’s high-end smartphones of 2023 from promising mountains and wonders in photography and video (8K/30fps, HDR 10+), especially with notable improvements in night photography.
The Galaxy S23 Ultra would be based on a 200 Mpex main sensor, the latest designed by Samsung, with a 12 Mpex ultra-wide angle and two telephoto lenses: one of 10 Mpex identical to that of its acolytes, a second 10 Mpex telephoto periscope with 10x optical zoom.
At the front, the selfie camera would be 12 Mpx for all while it was 40 Mpx before. But Samsung’s technology could make up for it.
Processor: goodbye Exynos, hello Snapdragon
South Korea’s new high-end smartphones this year should ditch the famous in-house designed Exynos processor to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, the most powerful system available on Android. And this for all markets. This will allow the devices to be more efficient, to take advantage of many new features in terms of audio, mobile games, photos, but also possibly satellite messages.
Functions: a complete matrix
As expected, the Galaxy S23 range will be able to have Bluetooth 5.3 and Wifi 6E connections. The Galaxy S23+ and S23 Ultra would benefit from the UWB (Ultra Wideband) feature for faster direct connections, especially with Samsung connected beacons. All smartphones would be IP68 certified to withstand dust and prolonged submersion. The Galaxy 23 Ultra would support the use of the stylus.
Autonomy: promises of resistance
The Galaxy S23 should benefit from a slightly larger battery than the S22 (3,900 mAh vs. 3,700 mAh). It will support 25W wired charging (probably no charger supplied like previous smartphones). But it is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 that should be the most profitable for the autonomy of the device. The S23+ could boast a larger battery to support its larger screen (4700 mAh), with 45W charging supported. The entire range would offer 10W wireless charging and reverse wireless charging.
The Galaxy S23 Ultra would go further with a 5000 mAh battery that supports 45 W and promises to make it last a long time, a lack of the latest models that Samsung promised to fill.
Storage
The Galaxy S23 should make do with two configurations: 128 or 256 GB of storage. The S23+ would offer 256 GB or 512 GB of storage. Both models would come with 8 or 12 GB of memory, depending on the model.
The S23 Ultra would be bigger with the option to go for 1TB of storage with 12GB of RAM.
prices and colors
According to filter RGClouds, the Galaxy S23 would start at $799 (about 740 euros HT), which would make it cheaper than the launch Galaxy S22 (859 euro). The Galaxy S23+ would maintain its price (999 dollars/1059 euros at the launch of the S22+). The Galaxy S23 Ultra would again top out starting at $1,249, slightly less than the $1,299 Galaxy S22 Ultra in its also 256GB version (there was a 128GB version last year).
The announced colors for the Samsung Galaxy S23 would be black, green, cotton white and lavender.
