A couple in which one person is shirtless and hides their nipples. This is the photo that is causing problems for the moderation teams of Instagram (a subsidiary of Meta, like Facebook). After a report from the users and the artificial intelligence of the social network, the decision was made to delete the publication.
The only problem, the couple filed a complaint. It was then the Meta surveillance council that examined the case. But unlike the first ruling, the institution considered that the deletion was a mistake and that the publication did not violate current regulations.
A permanent uncertainty
Worse yet, the oversight board has asked Meta to seriously review its policy on nudity or sexual content. According to him, today it is confusing and difficult to apply.
In the case at hand, the deletion was motivated by the association of a nude photo with a financial request. However, this type of request is prohibited on Meta platforms. Except that the call for donation and purchase of shirts was made with the aim of performing a surgical operation: a breast reduction.
Today, the restrictions and exceptions to these rules are many and confusing, says TechCrunch. Thus, scenes of childbirth and publications in health or medical contexts are authorized. All this generates permanent uncertainty for both users and moderators, says the American site.
To clarify decisions, the Supervisory Board would like to see the current structure for accepting and rejecting posts reviewed. He insists on taking into account modern definitions of gender and sexuality. But this new policy will have to remain vigilant so as not to open the door to a massive influx of pornographic images. A ban for Mark Zuckerberg, who wants his platforms to remain appropriate places for everyone.
