UK Crown Estate sues Twitter over unpaid rent in London

Twitter is being sued for not paying rent on its London offices, owned by Britain’s Crown Estate.

Twitter is decidedly lazy. After its San Francisco offices, it is the London offices that are in question. The British Crown Estate takes legal action against the social network for not paying its rent.

Crown Estate is a portfolio of British commercial properties historically owned by the monarchy. Now this entity is run by an independent board of directors and owns buildings and commercial land that generate profit collected by the UK government for public spending.

Located in the heart of the capital, the London offices of Twitter belong precisely to this entity that has initiated legal proceedings against Twitter, informed this January 24 a Crown Estate spokesperson for the US media CNN.

Offices close one after another

Talks have already taken place between the two main parties concerned about these rent arrears. Even if legal action is launched, the exchanges would still be ongoing, according to the spokesperson.

A similar situation occurred for the San Francisco offices. On December 29, the owner of the Hartford building filed a lawsuit in San Francisco court. Columbia Reit, which leases its facilities from the company, claims $136,250 in unpaid invoices.

All over the world, Twitter offices are closing. As is already the case in Brussels, but also in Southeast Asia, where company employees have been laid off for lack of a place to work.
