‘They’re after the kids’: Xbox’s ‘power saving’ mode draws ire from US conservatives

Microsoft now offers to turn off its latest Xbox series consoles by default instead of leaving them on standby. A decision that does not please the American right at all.

The Xbox may be an American creation, the game console is criticized by conservatives in the United States. Some even go so far as to recommend buying a PlayStation, the console’s Japanese competitor, all in the interest of saving energy and limiting CO2 emissions. A sacrilege for some conservatives who see it as a manipulation of children by “wake up” culture.

compensated downloads

This is particularly the case for the conservative American channel Fox News. Already at the forefront of the controversy over M&M candies, the channel’s presenters have criticized the latest update of the game console, presented on January 11, which announces that Xbox will take into account carbon emissions to optimize the download of data .

Additionally, this update enables power saving mode (shutdown mode) by default. With this setting, the console will turn off at the end of your games instead of staying in standby mode. It is also possible to set active hours, which allows the console to reduce its power consumption outside of these time slots, from 10 to 15 watts to 0.5 watts.

‘They take advantage of children’

But according to Fox News, these changes are the result of labor propaganda and have nothing to do with the environment. One of its animators, Jimmy Failla, assures that it is an “attempt to adhere to climate policy at an earlier age.” All supported by another presenter of the channel, Ainsley Earhardt: “Of course they are after the children.”

In addition to this episode, several complaints were heard on Twitter. The Young America Foundation wrote on the platform that “the awakening brigade is behind video games in the name of climate change.” A user posing as a patriot on his profile went as far as recommend “switch to PlayStation”, surely forgetting that it is a Japanese console. Even Senator Ted Cruz criticized the Xbox choices.

The changes to Xbox are part of Microsoft’s broader plan to become a carbon neutral company by 2030.
