ChatGPT, stronger than content creators? In the United States, the BuzzFeed site has announced a partnership with OpenAI to use their awesome ChatGPT chatbot. In practice, the tool will be used to create quizzes or help site journalists come up with new topic ideas. A BuzzFeed spokesperson assured CNN that the chatbot will not be used to write articles or help with reporting.
A wide mix of genres, the BuzzFeed site primarily offers quizzes and articles that focus on pop culture or celebrities. But the media has also built a reputation for investigative journalism, winning the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in 2021 for an investigation of the Uyghur community in China. The French version of the site was closed in 2018 due to lack of profitability.
Delighted investors
Listed on the stock exchange, the site is, however, experiencing serious financial difficulties, which has resulted in cascading exits in recent months. This new partnership, coupled with another $10 million deal with Meta to power Facebook and Instagram, has also reassured investors since BuzzFeed’s stock soared on Wall Street.
BuzzFeed is the first major content creator to announce a partnership with ChatGPT. At the beginning of January, the American press revealed that the site specialized in technology, CNET, had published articles written by ChatGPT since November. A practice finally suspended by the media after numerous criticisms for errors and lack of transparency.
