Released on January 26, the Digital Report 2023 focuses on digital uses around the world. The main result is that the daily time spent on the Internet is similar to the situation before Covid. Daily Internet use decreased by 20 minutes compared to last year and Internet users spend an average of 2h30 on social networks each day.
Now, 5.44 billion people use a mobile phone, representing 68% of the world’s population. For example, Android phone users spend 5 hours a day on their smartphone, which is an increase of seven minutes compared to 2022.
The world has 5.16 billion Internet users who spend an average of 6h37 on the Internet. It is interesting to note that users who therefore spend 20 minutes less on the Internet compared to last year now favor targeted searches with a specific objective.
Similarly, 4.76 billion people use social media. Facebook still sits at the top of the most used platforms with nearly 3 billion monthly active users, or 37% of the world’s population. Then come YouTube, WhatsApp and Instagram.
new uses
Above all, TikTok and Instagram reflect new uses of the Internet. 48% of 16-34 year olds now prefer social media if they want to learn about a brand rather than using a search engine. “Instagram has become the social network of choice for Internet users to conduct research online,” the report says.
Uses that brands have understood. TikTok ads reach more than 1 billion users aged 18 and over, which is an increase of 19% in just one year.
Streaming programs also have their share of the pie. The consumption of platforms continues to increase in front of television. Thus, users of working age spend 45% of their time watching television on services such as Netflix and Disney+.
82% of French people say they will have a smartphone by 2022 and spend an average of 32 hours a week in front of a screen.
