No more photos, place for text. Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, the co-founders of Instagram, announced on January 31 the launch of a new application: Artifact, reports the specialized newsletter platforms. The app will feature a personalized news feed using artificial intelligence.
Take a little Twitter and a lot of TikTok and mix them up. “A kind of TikTok with text”, is how the duo presents their new project. The teams have been working on it for a little over a year and Mike Krieger has formalized the launch of Artifact on his Instagram account.
Like TikTok’s “For You” page, the app will open up to a stream of content tailored to the user’s interests, with articles ranging from top newspaper headlines to niche news outlets. Over time, thanks to the artificial intelligence system, the flow will become more and more personalized. It will also be possible to share links, comment on them and discuss thanks to a messaging system integrated into Artifact.

The future application wants to highlight the quality of the information and claims to be open to all political sensitivities, but it will not hesitate to delete false information, the co-founders specify in platforms. The app relies heavily on artificial intelligence to evolve its system: “I think machine learning is the most interesting thing to work on right now,” Kevin Systrom confesses to platforms.
For now, the app is not yet available and no concrete release date has been announced. The teams are testing a first beta version with some users. The most curious, even with a French phone number, can now sign up for a waiting list to receive preliminary information about the launch. The app will be available for Android and iOS.
Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger launched Instagram in 2010 before selling it to Facebook in 2012 for $1 billion. They ended up leaving their company in 2018 following tensions with Mark Zuckerberg.
