Thousands of servers around the world have been subjected to a cyberattack, reports the Reuters news agency, citing Italy’s National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN). The hacking attack was carried out by ransomware, that type of malware that blocks access to a computer’s data and tricks the victim into paying a ransom to unlock it.
Italy’s ANSA news agency, citing ACN, said that servers were compromised in other European countries such as France and Finland, as well as in the United States and Canada.
Dozens of Italian organizations probably affected
The hacking attack was aimed at exploiting a software vulnerability, ACN Chief Executive Roberto Baldoni told Reuters, adding that it was large-scale.
Dozens of Italian organizations have likely been affected and many more have been warned to take steps to avoid being blocked from their systems.
“CISA is working with its public and private sector partners to assess the impact of reported incidents and provide assistance as needed,” the US Cyber and Infrastructure Security Agency said, Reuters reported.
