As every year since 2001, January 6 is synonymous with World Mobile Phone Free Day. A tradition – whose concrete effect remains to be demonstrated – that has taken on a new dimension as telephones have become smartphones, and their screens attract us for long hours every day.
As every year, the company Data.ai published its annual report on the use of mobile phones in the world in January. The document, which reviews the most popular applications in each country, includes a comparison of the time spent each day on your smartphone, depending on where you are in the world.
As specified by Data.ai, this data is collected by analyzing the use made of many Android smartphones. It is at least likely that they are of the same order on iPhone.
45% increase in three years in France
In the ten largest markets studied by Data.ai, users spend an average of 5 hours and 2 minutes looking at their smartphones each day. A figure 9% higher than that of 2020, a year marked, however, by Covid and the increase in time in front of screens.
In its report, Data.ai shows data from some of the major markets, including France. In 2022, the French used their smartphone an average of 3.9 hours a day, compared to 2.7 hours in 2019. That’s a 45% increase in time spent on mobile in just three years.
But France – which is just ahead of Germany (3.6 hours per day) – is far behind the countries where the population spends the most time on mobile: the record is held by Indonesia (5.7 hours per day), followed by Brazil (5.3 hours per day).
Spotlight: China, which imposes many limits on the youngest to prevent them from spending time on mobile phones or playing video games, shows the weakest increase. On average, Chinese people spent 3.2 hours a day on their smartphone in 2019, up from 3.6 in 2022. A much more measured increase of 12.5%.
