Why Marvel or Star Wars Shows May Soon Land on Netflix or Amazon

Netflix, Prime Video or television channels could broadcast exclusive content in the Disney, Star Wars or Marvel universes.

With financial constraints, Disney could monetize its exclusive shows. The group plans to resort increasingly to the sale of licences. Since its launch, Disney+ has wanted to be the only solution to watch movies and series from the group’s licenses, such as Star Wars or Marvel.

In its broadcasting activities, the group lost $1.5 billion in the third quarter, recalls Bloomberg. These poor performances had precipitated the head of the group Bob Chapek towards the exit in November 2022. He was then replaced by Bob Iger, already at the helm of the company from 2005 to 2020.

Repatriation Programs on Disney+

The new leader has promised to restructure the group. With the aim of modifying a measure taken by his predecessor: entrusting the choice of places and dates of issuance of films and series to the production directors. This decision is criticized because it gives a strategic option to people who do not produce a program. Jobs could even be lost in this restructuring.

As for the programs, the group has repatriated all its content to its Disney+ platform. This is particularly what happened with the Netflix-produced Marvel series (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage), available on the group’s streaming service from early 2022 in France.

But today, Disney’s financial situation is rearranging the cards. To recover its branch of activity linked to streaming, the company could sell the rights to broadcast its programs to its competitors. Therefore, Disney animated movies could return to Netflix.

Bob Iger should spell out the strategy he wants to implement in more detail when the company’s results are released on February 8.
