“Treated like robots”: Tesla employees no longer want to be constantly monitored

Employees at the car manufacturer announce that they want to form a union. Among the demands: that what they write on their computer keyboards no longer be recorded.

Apart from his much talked about activities at the head of Twitter, Elon Musk should face a new front. This time, it is on the side of his other company, the automaker Tesla, that he will have to fight. As reported by the American media Bloomberg, the employees of the offices of the city of Buffalo, in the State of New York (United States), are campaigning to form the first union of the company.

Employees soon to be replaced?

Unlike the company’s engineers, the 800 or so employees in the Buffalo offices face tasks that are, to say the least, daunting. They are, in particular, in charge of identifying objects in the video recordings of the brand’s cars, in order to correct possible errors in the interpretation of the autopilot software. All for a salary of around $19 an hour.

According to testimonials collected by Bloomberg, his employer closely monitors his activity, for example, recording all the activity of his computer keyboards. A practice that many companies have adopted in the context of telecommuting, but that Tesla employees would like to see stopped. Six of them assure the American media that they no longer take the time to go to the bathroom, in order to be up to the task.

If Tesla has not wanted to respond to Bloomberg on the subject, Elon Musk has already spoken out on the subject of employees dedicated to training his artificial intelligence for autonomous driving. With one ambition: to be able to replace them soon with robots too.
