A large part of American Twitter users will soon see ads of a new type: this is what the platform announced on your site, now authorizes ads for recreational cannabis, which is legal in about twenty American states. Until then, only ads for CBD products (without THC, the psychoactive substance in cannabis) were accepted.
“They tell their experiences”
For the company, this initiative is a welcome source of income. After its acquisition by billionaire Elon Musk, many advertisers withdrew from the platform due to its criticized strategy and many controversial comments.
“Twitter is a fun and engaging space for users to share their experiences with cannabis, whether for medical, wellness, or recreational use. They also recommend brands, products, or outlets,” Twitter analyzes on its site, in an attempt to attract market leaders.
As the specific company, these ads will continue to be monitored: they should only air in states where cannabis is legal and where the advertiser is officially licensed. Promotional content will also have to content itself with praising the merits of a brand, without directly redirecting Internet users to an online sales site.
Cannabis ads must also be directed only to adult internet users (over 21 in the United States). A limit that, however, could be quickly criticized, to the extent that Twitter, like other social networks, does not carry out any age verification.
