After a hack, Russian radio stations issued a fake missile launch alert

The Kremlin has denied any air strike and ensures that the issuance of the alert is the result of a cyberattack.

While the war in Ukraine has been going on for a year, the war on the airwaves continues. On February 22, an advertisement warning of a missile attack and urging residents to take shelter was broadcast on Russian commercial radio. Except that the government claimed that the information was false and that it was a hack, reports the outlet news from heaven.

“An air alert is announced. Everyone must go to shelters immediately. Attention! Attention! Threat of missile launch.” This was heard by Russian residents, particularly in the Moscow region, on the radio.

But the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry immediately posted a message on the Telegram network to deny any airstrike: “As a result of a hacker attack on the servers of several commercial radio stations in some regions of the country, there have been reports on the airwaves about an alleged air strike and the threat of a missile attack, this information is false and not true, we kindly ask you to follow the messages from official sources.”

At no time does Russia question or mention Ukraine in its post.

Cyber ​​attack as a tactical weapon

Cyber ​​attacks have been numerous on both sides since the start of the war. In May 2022, the Victory Day celebration that brings millions together in front of their televisions, Russian broadcasts displaying anti-war slogans were hacked. Last July, cyberspies suspected of working for Russia’s foreign intelligence service were charged with targeting NATO countries.

In January, Victor Zhora, one of Ukraine’s top cybersecurity officials, said that some cyberattacks on Ukrainian infrastructure could constitute war crimes because they were directly linked to Russian military attacks on civilians.
