The Danish Parliament announced on Tuesday that it has asked MPs and all their staff to ban the TikTok app from the mobile devices it provides due to the “risk of espionage.”
The announcement follows recommendations from the Danish Cybersecurity Center urging civil servants to remove TikTok from their phones after the European Commission banned the app on work devices to “protect” the institution.
“Threat to National Security”
The ultra-popular video platform, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, is coming under increasing scrutiny from Westerners who fear Beijing could access user data from around the world in this way.
The United States views the app as a threat to national security, and in late December banned its use on officials’ devices. Employees of federal agencies have recently been told to do the same.
The Canadian government will also ban the app from the mobile devices it provides to its staff because “TikTok’s data collection methods provide considerable access to phone content.”
