After the Commission, the European Parliament and the Council ban TikTok for their employees

The European Parliament on Tuesday asked its employees to remove the TikTok app. The European Council should take a similar decision soon, according to one of its members.

Major European institutions have cracked down on cybersecurity risks linked to the TikTok app. After the European Commission, the European Parliament in turn prohibited the Chinese application on the professional phones of its employees, this Tuesday, February 28.

“Faced with cybersecurity issues, in particular with regard to data protection and data collection by third parties, the European Parliament has decided, in agreement with other institutions, to suspend from March 20, 2023 the “use of the tikTok application on professional devices”, indicates the institution, in a statement consulted by the CNN site.

Cybersecurity measures

Therefore, the Chinese app will need to be removed from employees’ phones as soon as they are used as part of their duties. However, the European Parliament “strongly recommends” its members and employees to also remove the social network from their personal devices.

The European Council would like to do the same. One of its members told CNN that the institution “is in the process of implementing similar measures.” And he adds: “The General Secretariat of the European Council constantly reviews its cybersecurity measures, in close cooperation with the other institutions of the European Union.”

Since the beginning of the week, TikTok has faced a flurry of decisions against it. The United States has formalized the ban on the Chinese platform on the devices of White House officials. In the process, the Canadian government and the Danish parliament asked their employees to remove the app from their work devices.

These positions taken against TikTok point in particular to espionage risks. According to the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the lower house of the US Congress, the request is a “modern Trojan horse of the Chinese Communist Party”.
