TikTok will impose a limit of 60 minutes per day for users under the age of 18, the platform announced in a press release this Wednesday at noon. This new feature, which will be rolled out in “a few weeks”, is a response to worrying screen time among young people, and in particular on the hugely popular Chinese app.
This announcement, which is part of a new arsenal of measures aimed at families and adolescents, however, stumbles upon several holes in the frame-up.
Specifically, after consulting for an hour, the adolescent must enter a password to continue using TikTok, “which will lead them to take the initiative to extend their time on the platform or not,” the platform indicates.

In other words, TikTok hopes to empower its users without totally blocking their use. In addition, it will be possible to deactivate the default limit. But if the user exceeds 100 minutes of screen time in a day, “they will receive an alert inviting them to set a daily time limit,” TikTok further explains.
The thorny question of age control remains pending, which continues to be declarative in the application, also theoretically prohibited for those under 13 years of age.
Questioned by Tech&Co, TikTok assures that its moderators “have instructions to report any account suspected of not respecting age restrictions and to examine them.” And to clarify: “in July and September we eliminated more than 20 million accounts suspected of being in the hands of adolescents under 13 years of age.”
