According to the British newspaper I News, the American billionaire would have asked the managers of the social network to provide him with a list of employees who deserved to be promoted. Unknowingly, the managers thus signed their own death warrant: most were then fired and replaced by those they had recommended, with the aim of reducing costs.
Twitter employees describe a deleterious climate within the company. On Tuesday, Elon Musk clashed on his own social network with a disabled former Twitter employee, who wanted to know if he had been fired. “This is what sucks the most, sorry,” Elon Musk went so far as to declare, before deleting his tweet and apologizing. After a video call with his former employee, he would have finally offered to take his position.
Employees say they receive conflicting instructions, which vary according to Elon Musk’s whims. Their development prospects are also limited by the will of the head of Twitter: according to a staff member, mentoring meetings are no longer held because Elon Musk considered them uninteresting and preferred to implement other changes in the company.
Two thirds of employees left
In addition, those who work there are fewer and fewer Twitter employees, reports the site I News. Staff complain about having to obey orders from workers who joined the ranks of Twitter via Tesla and SpaceX.
Following the takeover of Twitter last October, Elon Musk planned to lay off almost 75% of the company’s employees. In November, Bloomberg information would indicate that it will be a little less: around 3,700 employees were on the bench, or half of the social network’s workforce.
In total, between the layoffs and voluntary departures, the arrival of Elon Musk at the helm of Twitter meant the departure of almost two thirds of the employees. At the end of February, when he announced that he was done with layoffs, the Twitter chief fired the engineers tasked with restoring the social network’s finances.
Since Elon Musk’s arrival, millions of users have left and Twitter’s ad revenue has plummeted. “Twitter would have to increase its subscriber count by almost 100 worldwide to make up for its lost ad revenue,” according to Jasmine Enberg, an analyst at Insider Intelligence.
