On Saturday, Qlex became the 20th player to reach the rank of Tetris Grandmaster. The feat occurred during the SpeeDons charity event, organized from March 9 to 12 to benefit Médicos del Mundo. The game specialist has managed to validate the most extreme challenge in the game Tetris: Grandmaster 3 – Horror Instinct. He is the first Frenchman, and the first European (excluding Russia), to reach this level of proficiency.
As the game’s commentators explain, the title offers an account system. Therefore, each player is constantly evaluated throughout their games. Depending on his performance, he becomes eligible for a randomly triggered promotion test to regain the rank of Grandmaster.
Prior to the live performance at the Palais des Congrès in Paris, Qlex created an account specifically dedicated to his SpeeDons stint, called MDM in reference to Doctors of the World. Upon his second release of the game, Qlex caused a hotfix.
A blind end game
Beyond the difficulty of the game, obtaining the degree of “Grand Master” is conditioned to the realization of specific figures by level of difficulty. But the biggest challenge is at the end of the game. Once you reach level 999, the game credits are displayed on the screen. But the bricks continue to fall, blindly (see video below). The player must then continue playing with the only visual cue for the three bricks to come.
In a tweet, Qlex said that he had achieved the rank of grandmaster last February. The only problem, the performance had not been recorded. Thus, this victory did not allow Qlex to join the “Grandmaster” pantheon of players. He is done, after 13 years of training.
