Samsung is attacking the mid-range. After unveiling its very high-end smartphones with the new Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra, the South Korean manufacturer takes advantage of the month of March to highlight its Galaxy A.
After formalizing its Galaxy A14s at CES in Las Vegas in January, the time has come to launch its Galaxy A54 5G into the deep range, its future bestseller that must arrive to reign over the mid-range, the king segment of smartphone sales . .
Become the king of the mid-range
Faced with Honor, Xiaomi and other Motorolas, Samsung goes on the offensive. The brand has decided to standardize the appearance of its smartphones a bit. Like the Galaxy A14, A34 or the Galaxy S23 range, the Galaxy A54 5G sports a slightly more refined design. The finishes are impeccable, but they are necessarily a little less premium than the higher-end ones. However, despite a slightly thicker chassis that gives the impression of being a bit more plastic, the Galaxy A54 has its touch of elegance with its glass rear. Nonetheless, it’s all stylish and colorful (available in black, white, lavender, and lime yellow).
Despite positioning itself in the mid-range, Samsung has not wanted to compromise on screen quality, its hallmark for a long time. The Galaxy A54 5G is equipped with a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED FHD+ panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. Very bright (up to 1000 nits) and offering vivid colours, the screen is highly appreciable and will be even more so for browsing . move around the screen or play with a very pleasant fluidity. This time, there’s no bubble notch, but rather a bump to accommodate the 32 MP selfie camera. And we find the fingerprint sensor under the screen as in the Galaxy S23.
The entire device is protected by Gorilla Glass 5 which promises some resistance to shocks and micro-scratches. And it’s even prepared to prevent drowning with an IP67 certification that makes it resistant to submersion for 30 minutes at 1m.
Advanced assets in photos
A beautiful design and, obviously, a camera that wants to raise the level of what can sometimes be found in this category of smartphones. Like its smaller counterparts in the range, the Galaxy A54 has three “naked” modules on the back with optical camera stabilization (50 Mpx main sensor, 12 Mpx ultra-wide angle and 5 Mpx macro). It can also shoot in 4K and offers a mode nocturnography to significantly improve night photography.
To carry and optimize its camera, Samsung relies on its own processor, the Exynos 1380. Undoubtedly one of the last designed internally and integrated into one of the smartphones, even the Galaxy S23s succumbed to Qualcomm’s siren songs by integrating a Snapdragon. 8 Gen 2. What to expect for slightly higher performance than the competition. Because it also has 8 GB of RAM accompanied by 128 or 256 GB of storage.
On the autonomy side, here we also find a 5000 mAh battery ready to promise at least two days of autonomy. And for recharging on USB-C, there’s no truly fast charging in sight, but support for a 25W charger won’t make you a lightning bolt when it comes to fast recharging.
Among the advantages of the Galaxy A54 5G that are not usually found for less than 500 euros is compatibility with Wi-Fi 6 for an even faster connection, the possibility of betting on an eSim to release physical dual SIM support that can then be released one of the spaces for a microSD card capable of adding up to 1 TB of storage to the smartphone. Samsung didn’t want to skimp on the audio side of things either. The Galaxy A54 features Dolby Atmos certified stereo speakers.
The Galaxy A34: the alternative that will find a place
Announced with a price starting at 499 euros, the Galaxy A54 5G may be a bit expensive for many. With some sacrifices, and always wanting to square and lock the mid-range, Samsung also takes the Galaxy A34 out of its bag with a very similar appearance, but with less polished finishes.
Compatible with 5G, the matte-finish device shares many of the strengths of the Galaxy A54. Starting with the quality of its brilliant 120 Hz Super Amoled panel. The A34’s screen is larger (6.6 inches), with the fingerprint reader under the panel and a U-shaped selfie camera this time (13 MP). . It also supports Wi-Fi 6, is based on Android 13 with 4 years for update and 5 years for security updates.
It offers a dual SIM or microSD card port up to 1TB, is IP67 certified to withstand submersion and dust, and has a 2-day battery life. On the other hand, the processor that powers the smartphone is not the same. Samsung is relying this time on the prowess of the MediaTek Dimensity 1080.
On the photo side, the three sensors on the rear have a different setup: a 48-megapixel main sensor with optical stabilization, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide angle, and a 5-megapixel macro sensor. Nothing surprising, but the possibility of taking simpler and more effective photos.
