Espionage, child pornography, scams: Facebook is committed to the fight against digital threats

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced the creation of a “strike chain” whose goal is to collaborate with other platforms for greater online security.

Meta (Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp) launched this Thursday a new transversal method against the main online threats, from manipulation campaigns to espionage, scams and child pornography.

This approach, called the “chain of death”, consists of identifying the commonalities between the techniques of these different malicious actors and encouraging other platforms, researchers and authorities to share their information.

“People say all the time that attackers always have the advantage. I want to show that the defense can win, thanks to an organization capable of detecting vulnerabilities”, specifies the engineer. Regularly accused of not fighting enough against misinformation and other digital scourges, Meta has created specialized teams in cybersecurity and preventive detection of these threats, with the help of artificial intelligence.

A fight already active

The American group regularly dismantles operations aimed at influencing opinion, carried out by foreign or domestic actors around the world. Regardless of their motives or affiliation (government agency, troll farm, etc.), malicious actors resort to similar tactics, such as using algorithm-generated photos to create fake profiles, for example.

The success of this approach will depend on the degree of collaboration with the various partners. Malicious actors, who are increasingly third-party companies paid by sponsors, “don’t work in silos, they’re on multiple platforms at once. So we need to reflect that reality, break down the silos, and bring the common as as much information as possible,” stresses Ben Nimmo.
