More than a thousand people linked to technology signed a letter published this Wednesday by the Future of Life Institute, in which they ask for a pause in the development of artificial intelligence systems. Among the signatories, most of whom are academics, is Elon Musk.
Luís Moniz Pereira, professor emeritus at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, believes that it is necessary to stop and think.
“It is a classic problem with technologies, especially disruptive ones. I’m thinking about electricity. By the time you want to deal with the harmful side effects of a technology, it’s already too late, because it’s already spread. with technology while it is still in development, you run the risk of preventing progress. This circumstance also occurs here,” said the Portuguese academic in statements to TSF.

In the letter, the signatories ask for a halt in Artificial Intelligence research and ask if we really want a technology capable of replacing us in tasks that we are happy to fulfill and not only in the rest.
“There is no doubt that all these issues have to be discussed publicly. Governments have to be aware of their policies and have to understand each other internationally. For example, the UN has discussed these problems of artificial intelligence, ”he considers. .
Luís Moniz Pereira affirms that it is necessary to do this, before we stop thinking: “People tend to think that everything that is a machine is perfect, because it was made to work. Cars are made to work well, elevators too , cell phones Therefore, there is this risk that people believe in a technology that, in reality, tells falsehoods, contradicts itself, and more: people, getting used to having that machine that thinks for them, begin to lose their own ability to think.”
These specialists justify this request with the channeling of opinions, propaganda and lies, as well as the substitution of humans in all kinds of functions. That is why they ask, as soon as possible, regulation in the development of a technology that they assure is very transformative.
