“The analogies are quite interesting,” observes Xavier Perret, director of Microsoft France’s Azure entity on the Tech&Co set. The creatures in the Blade Runner movie are really close to current generative AI.
As a reminder, for those who don’t have the scenario in mind. The action takes place in Los Angeles in 2019. Then appears a hyper-polluted city with flying cars and human-like “androids” whose operation is similar to today’s robots and software. Therefore, in the movie, Harisson Ford will fight against these androids.
Seen from today, the technologies featured in the film are quite prescient: voice command systems like voice assistants. Androids talk a lot, create things, are endowed with creativity in the ChatGPT style. These widgets are charged by a battery like ChatGPT which is powered by data.
Human-like AI
The androids share their fears, their dreams and they evolve. “In Blade Runner, the generative AI is more creative than deterministic,” says Xavier Perret. Ultimately, these creatures envy humans.
The last scene of the film is quite characteristic. In a monologue, the robot tells the main character, “I’ve seen so many things.” A word from a robot spoken in the manner of a human, as ChatGPT is capable of writing a poem.
At the time of the film’s release, the AI is on a sort of desert journey. In the 1970s there were natural language processing then nothing before 90 and finally an acceleration in the last five years.
