Canada launches investigation into ChatGPT after sharing private information

Artificial intelligence collected, used and communicated private data without obtaining the consent of the persons concerned.

Canada’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner announced Tuesday that it is opening an investigation into the company behind ChatGPT, as more and more voices call for greater regulation of artificial intelligence (AI).

The investigation into the US company OpenAI “was launched following an allegation that personal information was collected, used and disclosed without consent,” the government body said. Launched in November, the OpenAI ChatGPT chatbot uses information available online to answer user queries in detail.

Since its launch, ChatGPT has been taken by surprise by users impressed by its ability to clearly answer difficult questions, write sonnets or computer code. Funded by the computer giant Microsoft, which has added it to several of its services, it is sometimes presented as a potential competitor to the Google search engine.

global concerns

On Friday, Italy became the first country in the Western world to block ChatGPT over data usage issues. AI also fuels much deeper concerns than the mere use of personal data, and the European Union is currently preparing a draft regulation that could be finalized by early 2024, for implementation a few years later.

The European police agency Europol recently warned that criminals are poised to take advantage of artificial intelligence such as chatbots to commit fraud and other cybercrime.

Last week, billionaire Elon Musk, one of the founders of OpenAI, whose board he later left, and hundreds of world experts called for a six-month break from research on AIs more powerful than GPT-4, the latest version of the software on which ChatGPT is based, released in mid-March, citing “great risks to humanity.”
