Russian intelligence services or the Wagner paramilitary group would use Discord to spread their information. This was stated by Brad Smith, the president of Microsoft during an interview at the Summit of the world economy organized by the American media Semafor on Wednesday.
The exchange between the editor-in-chief of Semafor and Brad Smith returned to the leak of classified American documents through the Discord platform, which Microsoft tried to acquire in 2021. At first, the Microsoft president wanted to restore the context: “It is not as if playing obligations was going to lead to deaths in real life.”

But in recent months, the company has identified Russian attempts to penetrate these gaming circles through its specialized digital threat teams. “We even alerted the government on this point”, specifies Brad Smith.
Among the actors behind these maneuvers are Russian intelligence or the Wagner paramilitary group -whose propaganda is already proliferating on TikTok-. According to the president of Microsoft, these entities use community platforms related to video games “as a place for the circulation of information.”
In addition to the deductible obligations (owned by Activision, a company that Microsoft intends to acquire) Brad Smith cited the video game Minecraft. The Discord servers of these two titles are among the most important in the world of video games. The first-person shooter has more than 500,000 players, while more than a million cube followers are present on the Discord server of Minecraft.
