The Japanese video game group Sega will buy Rovio, the Finnish company that created the famous video game Angry Birds, valued at more than 700 million euros, the companies announced on Monday, quoted by AFP.
“Combining the strengths of Rovio and Sega presents an incredibly bright future,” said Alexandre Pelletier-Normand, Rovio’s CEO, adding that the Finnish company was advising shareholders to accept the offer.
The proposal is part of the “long-term goal” of the creator of the famous Sonic to expand into the mobile game market.
“Among the fast-growing global game market, the mobile game market has especially high potential,” said Haruki Satomi, CEO of Sega.
In 2022, Rovio, which employs more than 500 people, had revenue of €317.7 million and adjusted net profit of €31.4 million. They released the Angry Birds game in 2009, which quickly became one of the most popular games on the Apple App Store.
Seven years later, the movie “Angry Birds”, produced by Sony Entertainment, was also a huge success, grossing more than 300 million euros worldwide. In addition, Rovio also runs Angry Birds theme parks in several countries and oversees the publication of children’s books about the famous birds in a dozen languages.
