STRAIGHT. France and a dozen countries will officially recognize the state of Palestine this Monday on UN Monday

At least 145 countries from the 193 UN members already recognize the state of Palestine, according to the AFP count. The latter did not obtain a recent confirmation for three African countries.

This count included the United Kingdom and Canada, the first G7 countries to make such recognition, as well as Australia and Portugal, which recognized this state yesterday.

Russia, Arab countries, almost all in Latin Africa and America, the vast majority of Asian countries, including India and China, also recognize this state.

Until the war in Gaza, Western and North Europe was unanimous in non -recognition, except Sweden since 2014. But in 2024, Norway, Spain, Ireland and Slovenia followed the Route of Stockholm.

In response to the recognition of the Palestinian State by several countries, the Israeli president deplored a “sad day for those looking for true peace.”

“It will not help any Palestinian, it will not release any hostage, and will not help us reach an agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians. This will only strengthen the forces of darkness,” wrote Isaac Herzog in a statement.

The United Kingdom, Australia Canada and Portugal officially recognized the state of Palestine yesterday, on the eve of the UN General Assembly.

The British prime minister, Keir Starmer, justified this decision for the desire to “revive the hope of peace and a solution to two states”, in a video message transmitted on social networks.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has advanced the same argument, saying in a press release that registered it “as part of a concerted international effort to preserve the possibility of a solution of two states.”

In Australia, the head of government, Anthony Albanese, argued “the legitimate and long aspirations of the people of Palestine to a state that is proper.”

When observing his step, the Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel explained that “recognizing the state of Palestine is (…) the achievement of a fundamental, coherent and largely accepted policy,” and added that the solution of two states is “the only form of a fair and lasting peace.”

In a video to Western leaders who recognized the Palestinian state, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that such a state “no (no) the day.”

“I have a clear message for leaders who recognize a Palestinian state after the atrocious massacre of October 7: it offers a great reward for terrorism,” said Benjamin Netanyahu in this video transmitted by his office.

“I have another message for you: it will not happen. No Palestinian state will be created west of Jordan,” he added.

In an interview broadcast yesterday on the American CBS channel, Emmanuel Macron passed through a condition in the opening of an embassy in Palestine, the launch of the hostages selected in Gaza by Hamas.

Its launch “is a clear condition before opening an embassy,” said the French president in English in an interview recorded Thursday in Paris.

Currently, France has a general consulate in Jerusalem, which guarantees its representation with the Palestinian authority. The French embassy in Israel is located in Tel Aviv.
