Eating disorders: Dove launches a campaign warning about the dangers of social networks

The hygiene brand Dove has just launched a prevention campaign warning of the dangers that social networks can represent for the mental health of younger users.

It is no longer a secret that social networks, be it TikTok or Instagram, are recognized as potentially harmful to mental health.

Depression, anxiety, eating disorders, so many ailments that can be triggered by these channels. It is in particular on this last point that the hygiene and care brand Dove has wanted to alert, transmits the British media. the independent.

The brand features Mary, a young woman recovering from her eating disorder, which she developed from being exposed to harmful content online.

3 out of 5 young people affected

The video shows the journey of the young woman, whose mental health deteriorates as she watches a lot of content that promotes thinness, weight management techniques and other dangerous eating practices.

Along with Mary, Dove features more than a dozen young women recovering from eating disorders, anxiety, depression, self-harm and dysmorphophobia.

In the summer of 2022, the TikTok social network continued to be singled out for promoting non-educational content related to eating disorders, despite measures taken shortly before to combat it.

Shortly before, the Instagram social network was the target of two complaints accusing it of having triggered eating disorders in two young people.

In addition to the particularly young age of daily users, the sometimes incomplete moderation of these platforms exposes them to harmful content. A scientific journal study Nature indicated, in early 2022, that young users were those whose mental health was most likely to be degraded by social media use.
