Samsung Electronics said on Tuesday it had banned some of its employees from using generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT, after citing “misuse” of the technology in an internal document.
In recent months, other large companies, including Goldman Sachs, have already banned or restricted the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) platforms. ChatGPT, designed by California start-up OpenAI, appeared in November and users quickly embraced it, impressed with its ability to clearly answer difficult questions, write sonnets or write computer code.
Samsung’s ban applies to employees of the mobile devices and home appliances department, a Samsung representative told AFP.
“Temporary Ban”
An internal memo seen by AFP says Samsung is working to find ways to use generative artificial intelligence services in a “safe environment for employees so that work efficiency and comfort can be improved.”
“Until these measures are in place, we temporarily prohibit the use of AI-generative services for company-owned computers,” the document added. The internal memo indicates that it was aware of “misuse cases” of this type of tool by Samsung employees, without giving details.
The document further recommends that employees not upload work-related information to these platforms when logging off of company premises.
