The hosting of child pornography sites in France under debate at the UN

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child says it regrets that France is one of the main hosts of pornographic sites involving minors in Europe.

The battle for the protection of minors on the Internet in France finds an echo up to the UN. An expert from the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child deplored on May 9 that France is one of the main hosts of child pornographic sites in Europe. A reality against which the French authorities have said they want to fight.

France reiterates its commitment

“So, what are the additional resources that can be made available to specialized law enforcement in this area?” he asked the French delegation, led by the Secretary of State for Children, Charlotte Caubel.

During the response session, the French official did not deny the expert’s statements and assured that “it is not to our glory” that France is one of the first hosts of pornographic images involving children. “It is true that we have a digital capacity that explains, among other things, why we host so much. Which is not the case in all countries,” he said.

“It is an eminently important issue”

He also highlighted the importance of “empowering families”, with an awareness campaign recently launched in France: “A bill is currently in Parliament to talk about a numerical majority at 15 years”, below which the Parents will need to give consent for children. be registered on a certain number of platforms, she explained.

The government will also give the Audiovisual and Digital Communication Regulatory Authority (Arcom) the power to order, without the assistance of a judge, the blocking by telecommunications operators and the exclusion of pornographic sites that do not prevent minors access its content.

And, he insisted, “of course, we must hold digital platforms to account” on the protection of children, as has been done with hateful or terrorist content.
