Spotify removed tens of thousands of AI-generated songs

The tracks had been created by the Boomy tool, generating listening revenue for their authors through bots responsible for “listening” to the fake songs over and over again.

The technique was well oiled. To record streaming revenue, scammers have posted tens of thousands of AI-generated music tracks using the Bloomy tool on Spotify. Then they programmed bots to massively “listen” to the songs: the authors thus generate income, calculated according to the number of reproductions.

This Tuesday, Spotify removed tens of thousands of fake songs, according to information from the Financial Times, which explains that Universal Music Group has sounded alarm bells with the streaming platform.

A big challenge for Spotify

For Spotify, the massive arrival of artificial intelligence is a big challenge because Boomy allows you to create as many songs as you want, in a few seconds.

Available for several years, the software makes no secret of its purpose: to allow “authors” to generate income on Spotify. In practice, Boomy remains the copyright holder, but pays 80% of the revenue to the user.

Except that the explosion of artificial intelligence in recent months has made Boomy even more popular, which now poses a real risk to the still-fragile functioning of the music industry, which is only just completing its shift to digital.

According to FT, Boomy reiterated his total opposition to “artificial streaming” that fraudulently increases the audience of songs.

By late April, a fake duet using the AI-generated voices of Drake and The Weeknd had been streamed millions of times on Spotify.
