Vivendi seeks content creators to relaunch Dailymotion

Vivendi wants to revive its Dailymotion video hosting platform and is looking for videographers to exist against YouTube and TikTok.

Towards a Dailymotion renaissance? It is in any case the ambition of the French media giant Vivendi. The group said on May 11 that it had ambitions to revamp its Dailymotion video hosting platform and, to that end, was looking for content creators to compete against YouTube and TikTok.

Created in 2005, Dailymotion was once favored by many French-speaking web stars who later left it to become YouTubers, named after the platform acquired in 2006 by Google. The company’s shareholding history has been turbulent, with successive state interventions to prevent a sale abroad, the takeover bid by Orange to recapitalize the company, then from 2015 the sale to Vivendi, controlled by the Bolloré family.

So, the platform specialized in providing a video player to professionals and, in particular, to the media, which today make up the majority of its global audience. Of the 400 million monthly active users, less than a quarter use the Dailymotion site live. Still far from the 2,500 million monthly users of YouTube, or the more than 1,700 million of TikTok. But the platform is now aiming to surpass 1 billion users by 2026.

An update for the mobile app

Therefore, it tries to find creators, with whom it will share its advertising revenue. The company has already selected 200 and aims to “attract more than 5,000 by the end of 2024,” its CEO, Maxime Saada, also chairman of the board of the Canal+ television group, told Le Figaro.

According to the leader, the platform’s algorithm will be “capable of analyzing the sentiment score of a video to recommend another video that would present a complementary or contradictory point of view.” The ‘new Dailymotion’ will also benefit from an update to its mobile. application, with news such as “React”, user comments in video format, or surveys.
