Apple files patent for ‘self-healing’ folding screens

While all of its competitors are now in the race for foldable smartphones, Apple prefers, as usual, to take the time to study the subject. The Apple giant has filed a patent for a potential future self-healing folding screen that would overcome the problem of apparent folding in certain models already sold on the market.

After the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold, then the Oppo Find N2 Flip and most recently the Google Pixel Fold, a foldable iPhone to come? If the rumors remain theoretical, some signs may lead to this clue.

In fact, a recent patent published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and detected by Patently Apple confirms that Apple could be working on a folding screen that would have the ability to “repair itself”.

A self-healing layer to limit scratches.

Almost four years after the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, users continue to complain about the lack of robustness of their smartphone. The reason: by folding and unfolding the device, the screen tends to deteriorate due to the weight of wear, revealing in some an unsightly mark or even a crack in the fold area.

Patiently watching the competition, Apple decided to take a closer look at this problem and was working on a new technology that would use heat, light, or even electrical current so that the creases could heal themselves. If this new patent detected last January does not formalize a future launch of a product equipped with this technology, it illustrates Apple’s desire to prepare for this eventuality and participate in the race for folding screens, if it continues, however.

Other anti-fall technology patent

This patent therefore revives the buzz around a foldable iPhone, without confirming a specific agenda. But another document, identified this time by TechRadar on March 18, seems to once again support this theory. Apple has filed a patent that would allow the iPhone to snap shut to protect its screen in the event of a fall.

Meanwhile, other sources are more inclined to launch a foldable iPad, such as renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. But only the Apple firm will be able to put an end to doubts and we will have to be patient to know which way Apple will take.
