The famous Apple World Developers Conference (WWDC) is approaching, but the Cupertino company is already preparing what follows. If Apple were to use its June 5-9 event to unveil its upcoming M2/M2 Pro chip-based computers — including a larger MacBook Air M2 with a 15-inch display — the brand would already be testing M3 chips in third place. third-party applications to ensure compatibility with Apple’s software ecosystem.
What will the M3 chip be like?
According to Mark Gurman and data collected from a developer on the App Store, the test version of the chip has 12 processor (CPU) cores, 18 graphics cores, and 36GB of unified memory. Also according to rumors, the test would have been carried out on the future MacBook Pro 14/16 with the upcoming macOS 14 and the chip would be adapted to the upcoming iMac and MacBook Air.
For comparison, the M2 Pro chip released in January 2023 has 10 CPU cores, 16 graphics cores, and 32GB of memory. Therefore, Apple seems to have resorted to manufacturing chips in 3 nanometers (compared to 5 nanometers for M2 chips) to integrate more cores into its processors. A delicacy of engraving that we also hope will enhance the power of the next iPhone 15.
According to Mark Gurman, after Apple suffered a 31% drop in PC sales in the last quarter, the M3 chip could well be a way to re-engage its customers.
