Reassuring or traumatic? Parents decide to track their children with AirTags

Several parents have decided to equip their children with Apple tracking devices so as not to lose them. A choice exposed on social networks and that sometimes gives rise to heated debates.

For several years, apps have allowed parents to monitor their children, from simple protection to outright spying. Some tools thus offer live geolocation of the child. But some parents have decided to use an existing technology to track their children: Apple’s AirTag.

Several parents have proudly displayed their device on social media, such as TikTok. Vada Stevens and Lacey Johnson, American mothers, for example, highlighted their children equipped with bracelets with AirTags, perfectly coordinated with their outfits.

A way that they can monitor their children and especially “beep” to notify them of an expected return home, with the “Locate” application on their Apple device and the “Play a sound / Locate the AirTag” function.

Uses increasingly questioned

However, in the comments, Internet users are divided on this use of the Apple device. While some see it as a very safe way to care for their children, others see it as a traumatic practice for young children.

Because originally, Apple AirTag was simply to help users not lose their keys or a backpack. But since its launch in 2021, many alternative uses for the tracker have developed. In New York, AirTags are used, for example, to combat car theft. They can also help find luggage lost during a trip.

But its use can quickly lead to more worrying practices. Apple thus faces several complaints in the United States about its tracker, used maliciously after love breakups, to track and harass women.
