It’s a walkman, but not musical. He wants to play with interactivity, but not with excess technology. Flam is a newcomer who cultivates paradoxes. At a time when everything is connecting, the new interactive reader from Lunii, the French startup behind La Fabrique à histoire, will tickle the youngest where it tickles: the desire to have an object that is in technological times. .
Under his appearance as a giant Game Boy Color or iPod, Flam wants to seduce children from 7 to 11 years old with his yellow and green colors that give him vitality. But he wants to do it without all the lures of connected products that Lunii finds useless. “We voluntarily kept physical buttons so that the children maintain a mechanical approach to the object, to work their motor skills and associate it with reflection,” he explains to technology and company Maëlle Chassard, co-founder of Lunii.
The big yellow wheel will allow the child to navigate through the menus so that the young reader can make decisions. The screen is also deliberately non-touch. The reinforcement on top of such a helmet even puts a little more marked distance, but everything is still perfectly legible.
Be interactive and stimulating
Interactivity is the keyword of Flam. Through each proposed story, the young user will be able to decide on the dialogues and their choices in the reflection exercises. Flam really wants to “stimulate the child’s imagination and develop his critical spirit.” All the activities, the actions of the reader are designed in this sense (choose a destination, customize your hero/heroine, unlock rewards and content, obtain items, negotiate…).
Therefore, Flam will offer 10 stories that can be read or listened to with a Bluetooth headset or connected to the USB-C port (USB-C/jack adapter provided initially), or through the speaker on the front. Each audiobook was designed by Éditions Lunii, which had already created its own library for La Fabrique à histoire. You will also find audiobooks designed with renowned partners: Dungeons and Dragons to bring a bit of RPG and Asmodee around the game The werewolves of Thiercelieux. Other partners will be announced soon.
To reassure parents, the device was designed without an Internet connection. The child cannot exit the audio book operation. Only the possibility of adding music will appear soon (during 2024), but this will go through a secure and timely Wi-Fi connection between the parent’s smartphone and Flam.
Price and availability of Lunii Flam
The interactive reader will go on sale at the end of 2023 at 99.90 euros. It is available for pre-order on Ulule from May 23 from 79 euros.
