5G had 3 million users at the end of 2021, now it has 8.2 million. Two years after its launch in France, the fifth generation network has registered a significant increase according to the latest data from the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications, Posts and Press Distribution (Arcep).
In one year, the proportion of active SIM cards in 5G networks has increased from 4% to 10% on French territory. However, this significant increase remains to be qualified as, in comparison, the active 4G base represents 68.9 million SIM cards, or 83% of the total number of SIM cards (+3 points in a year). Arcep is still noticing a slowdown in the number of new cards.
1,800 million euros of investment in 5G
The implementation of 5G in the territory has also made it possible to increase investments by telecommunications operators: the total amount invested (not including the purchase of frequencies) amounts to 3.8 billion euros in 2022, an increase of 175 million euros. In detail, almost 1.8 billion were allocated to invest in 5G local loops.
Ultimately, these investments should make it possible to further popularize 5G, which for the moment is still rejected by the French. However, the fifth generation network has many advantages: low delay in data transmission, a tenfold increase in speed, network security and use for innovative activities such as autonomous vehicles or augmented reality. Also accused of exposing more to electromagnetic waves, the 5G has not changed, however, the exposure of the French according to the National Frequency Agency.
