In Brazil, a slavery simulation video game sparks outrage

The game allows you to “buy, trade and sell” slaves. Google ultimately decided to remove the title from its app store.

Today there are simulation games in many fields: agriculture, surgery or even cleaning. But there was a line that hadn’t been crossed until now that developer MagnusGames decided to cross: creating a bondage simulation game.

On April 20, the independent publisher made available to Brazilian Internet users bondage simulatora game that allows you to put yourself in the shoes of a slave owner, capable of buying, selling, exchanging and even torturing the blacks placed at your disposal.

According to some screenshots collected by CNN Brazil, scravide simulator (in Portuguese), displays a welcome message stating that the goal of the game is to “manage your slaves, generate money, and move towards your goals.”

More than 1000 downloads

During the gameplay, the player is advised to hire guards to watch over the slaves and recruit good level slaves: “the higher the level, the better the slave can get better profit for you” says some posts. .

Downloaded thousands of times since its creation, the game was removed by Google from its app store on May 24. The company explains that the Play Store does not allow applications that “promote violence or hatred towards groups based on their race or origin, as well as those that show gratuitous violence or dangerous activities.”

Investigation opened by the Public Ministry

This withdrawal from the game mainly follows the outraged reactions of netizens and Brazilian political representatives. Orlando Silva, a Brazilian deputy, announced in particular on Twitter that he had filed a complaint with the Public Ministry for racism.

The Public Ministry, for its part, indicated that it opened an investigation to understand how the game could have been put online in the Play Store. The Ministry of Racial Equality has asked to meet with Google representatives. Abolished in 1888, slavery is a theme that remains in many memories in Brazil. At the beginning of the 19th century, of the 3.5 million inhabitants of the country, around 1.5 million were slaves, recalls the BBC.

However, despite the challenges, the game received a rating of 4 stars out of 5 possible. Developer MagnusGames did not respond to requests for an explanation from various outlets. The publisher simply stated in the application that the game was created for “entertainment” purposes only and that the studio condemned slavery in all its forms.

MagnusGames states that “all in-game content is fictional and not related to specific historical events.” The studio is behind other rather baffling simulation games, such as Mafia Offline Assassin Simulator, where the player must play the role of a criminal and carry out murders and crimes of all kinds. The game’s catchphrase? “Kill all the citizens before the detective arrests you.”
