In the augmented reality segment, the focus is on Apple and its future mixed reality headsets that could be unveiled in June. A situation that does not scare Seer. After almost three years of development, this startup based in Tel Aviv (Israel) launched on May 18 the commercialization of the Spacetop, the first laptop in the world to use augmented reality. A product that could be a game changer if it keeps all its promises.
Innovative, this mobile PC has the particularity of not having a physical screen. Supplied with a classic computer keyboard, it comes with a slim pair of augmented reality glasses that act as an interface.
Wired to the Spacetop, they display a curved virtual display that can extend up to 100 inches (2.54m) and floats in front of the user’s face to provide a safe and immersive work environment. Only the user with glasses can see the virtual screen projected on the chassis. A possibility that ensures the confidentiality of the displayed data.
A configuration inspired by that of a smartphone
The different virtual windows are manipulated with your hands, the keyboard or the Spacetop trackpad and appear superimposed on the real environment. The frame weighs just 106g and offers Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution for each eye at 72Hz. It also includes an audio system.
Under the hood, the Spacetop’s keyboard dock, which weighs 1.5kg despite the absence of a physical screen, relies on a Snapdragon 865 processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Features close to those of a good smartphone. It also has 5G, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, a 5MP webcam, fingerprint reader, and two USB-C ports.
According to Sightful, the autonomy of the device is around 5 hours. The augmented reality laptop will go on sale in early access on the Sightful site. The first 1,000 registered will be able to get it for 2,000 dollars (1,860 euros).
