No longer will you have to go out of your way to terminate a contract that no longer interests you. The government has just published a decree aimed at facilitating the termination of contracts online, without consumers having to go through long and laborious procedures. This “termination in three clicks”, as mentioned by the Ministry of Economy, comes into force as of June 1.
This decree refers in principle to all sectors, whether it is a telecommunications or banking contract, a media subscription, etc. The insurance sector had already been involved in the process for several weeks. Thus, any subscription, service or rental contract, whether the subscription is made online or on paper, must be able to be terminated thanks to an “identifiable, easily accessible, direct and permanent function”, the press release specifies. of the Ministry of Economy, published on June 1.
Put an end to the daunting steps
The idea is above all to put an end to the long and daunting procedures, making the consumer go through various services or even by sending a registered letter. Procedures that push, in some cases, the consumer not to terminate a contract.
“We want to promote the consumer’s power of choice and thus prevent them from having too complex procedures that encourage them not to start a process of unsubscribing a service that they no longer use and for which they would continue to pay despite everything”, supports Olivia Grégoire, Delegate Minister in charge of SMEs, Commerce, Crafts and Tourism.
The General Directorate for Competition, Consumption and Fraud Prevention will ensure the correct application of this decree by companies, who have until September 1, 2023 to comply with it.
