Attack in Annecy: the dissemination of images of the attack on social networks is punishable by law

The Minister of Digital requests that all content on the Pharos platform be reported.

Videos of the attack with a knife, which occurred in Annecy on June 8, have been circulating on social networks for a few hours, disseminated both by accounts with little follow-up and by public figures. As a reminder, the dissemination of illegal content is subject to penalties.

As Cyberend (gendarmerie command in charge of digital investigations) points out, anyone who disseminates and shares videos that show violence towards people is subject to criminal sanctions. The two reflexes to adopt are the following: do not distribute, like or even share illegal content and report it.

The dedicated platform is called Pharos (Reporting Alignment, Analysis, Cross-Verification and Guidance Platform). It allows any Internet user to report content published on the Internet for various reasons: pedophilia and child pornography, racism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia, incitement to racial, ethnic and religious hatred, scams and financial scams and finally, terrorism and apology for terrorism. . Applications are processed by the police and gendarmes.

Up to 5 years in prison

For his part, the Delegate Minister in charge of Digital Transition and Telecommunications, Jean-Noel Barrot, assured on Twitter that “the government is in contact with the Twitter France teams to guarantee the elimination of any shocking image.”

According to article 222-33-3 of the Criminal Code, whoever disseminates “the recording of such images will be punished with five years in prison and a fine of 75,000 euros.”

The platforms will be penalized if it is shown that they have deliberately posted or left this illegal content on the network, as recalled by the 2004 law for confidence in the digital economy.
