Annecy: Despite removal requests, videos continue to circulate the day after the attack

On Twitter or Facebook, videos of the Annecy knife attack have been mostly deleted. However, some remain visible despite the criminal sanctions imposed.

Such anonymous political figures, many Internet users have transmitted these -unbearable- images of the knife attack in Annecy. However, the distribution of these videos is punishable by law: in fact, anyone who spreads and shares videos that show violence against people is subject to criminal sanctions.

The minister in charge of Digital, Jean-Noël Barrot, assured on Thursday that he was “in connection with the Twitter France teams to ensure the removal of any shocking image.” But after the attack, while most of the content in question has since been removed, some still remains viewable on social media.

In a very short time, Tech&Co was able to identify several videos of the events of this Friday through a simple search in the internal search engines of Twitter or Facebook. In particular, we see the attacker stabbing in the direction of a stroller in a playground.

five years in prison

When the publications multiplied, shortly after the attack in which six people were injured, including four small children, the command of the gendarmerie in charge of digital investigations recalled the criminal sanctions incurred.

Internet users who broadcast these sequences of violence against people will be punished with five years in prison and a fine of 75,000 euros. However, the law specifies that article 222-33-3 of the Criminal Code exempts from sanction disclosures resulting “from the normal exercise of a profession whose purpose is to inform the public or serve as evidence in court.”

In the face of such videos, the correct reflexes to adopt are simple: do not share or like this content and report the publication to the Pharos platform.

“Protect yourself and your loved ones from these images,” urged the Interior Ministry spokesman. “It doesn’t make sense to see a child being stabbed in a pram.”
