Reddit users will see the door closed this Monday when they want to access certain content. And for good reason, many members of the platform have agreed to a total “blackout” of at least 24 hours, starting this Monday, June 12. Internet users can no longer see certain conversations or add comments on the social network that, among other things, hosted the already famous “pixel war” in 2022.
This decision by users follows Reddit’s decision to increase prices for accessing its API (Application Programming Interface) starting July 1. The company justifies this choice by the practices of certain applications, which include excessive use, violations of privacy or the use of data for advertising or commercial purposes.
$20 million to use the API
The choice of Reddit soon led to multiple app closure announcements, such as Apollo, which allowed 900,000 users to use Reddit while enjoying additional features.
In a Reddit post, Apollo developer Christian Selig said that Reddit charges $20 million a year to use its API. Due to lack of resources, the app will stop working on June 30.
Twitter decided to access its paid API a few months ago to capitalize on certain automated accounts and make Twitter profitable, a long-term goal for Elon Musk. But the decision immediately led to the closure of many accounts on the social network, many of which refused to pay.
