An American was executed Thursday in Florida nearly 40 years after killing two women he sexually assaulted. Duane Owen, 62, had been sentenced to death for the murder and sexual assault of a woman in Florida in 1984.
The children of the 38-year-old victim were sleeping in an adjoining room and the next day they discovered her body.
Appeals dismissed
At his trial, Duane Owen admitted to the murder, as well as other attacks. He was also convicted of raping and stabbing to death a 14-year-old nanny the same year.
In an appeal to the Supreme Court, Duane Owen’s lawyers demanded that their client be pardoned on the grounds of his alleged insanity. This request was rejected.
Duane Owen is the 12th convict executed since the beginning of the year in the United States, in just four states: Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Florida.
