Foreign Secretary João Gomes Cravinho said on Friday he was in contact with British authorities about whether the man detained as a suspect in the killing of three people in Nottingham this week has Portuguese nationality.
“Recently this morning we discovered that the suspect is said to have Portuguese nationality. We are investigating the matter, but we will be in close contact with the British authorities on this matter,” he told journalists after meeting his British counterpart, James Cleverly.
Cravinho added that “it is a terrible event” and took the “opportunity to express our deepest condolences” to the victims.
The British press identified on Friday, based on various sources, that the 31-year-old man arrested as a suspect for the killing of three people in Nottingham this week has Portuguese nationality.
Although authorities have not yet identified the suspect, the British press reports that the murder suspect is a former student at the University of Nottingham.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the parents, originally from Guinea-Bissau, worked on the island of Madeira and obtained Portuguese nationality in 2006.
The couple moved to the United Kingdom with their three children in 2007 and acquired European Union resident status.
Lusa has tried to get confirmation from the Portuguese Foreign Office and British police, but has not yet received a response.
Neighbors in the West Wales village of Haverfordwest describe an educated, hard-working family who attend a local evangelical church.
Nottingham Police announced on Thursday that they have been given a further 36 hours to question the suspect in the murder of three people and the wounding of three others.
“A team of dedicated detectives continues to question the suspect and get a good idea of what happened that morning,” the police said.
The investigation is reviewing video surveillance footage, forensic analysis, eyewitness accounts and has searched multiple properties in the city.
Police believe the suspect stabbed two 19-year-old University of Nottingham students and killed another 65-year-old man before stealing their van.
He then tried to run over three people on several occasions, one of whom was still hospitalized in serious condition.
Police arrested the suspect using a ‘taser’ when the vehicle was stopped.
